What Is The Phuket Sandbox Plan? - Shaun Stenning

According to Shaun Stenning, Thailand will go ahead with a plan next month to reopen to vaccinated foreign visitors starting with its most popular resort island Phuket, as it tries to revive tourism while battling its biggest coronavirus outbreak so far.

This is a government initiative to open the Island of Phuket to international tourists to try and alleviate some of the economic pressure on the local community. The island has been closed now for about 15 months and the plan is to open the island, with restrictions, to international tourists from July 1st.

If you are fully vaccinated, have insurance, and follow the guidelines you can visit the beautiful island of Phuket and help the local economy recover.

Shaun Stenning in the tourism business. This reopening for international tourists has a big impact on his business. For almost 15 months Phuket has been closed and it has caused a lot of damage to the tourism industry.

Phuket plans to reopen on July 1st. Shaun Stenning is really hands-on in making his business ready for the international market.

To give you a quick background of what’s under the "Phuket Sandbox" plan, foreigners who have been fully vaccinated and fly direct to Phuket from overseas do not need to undergo quarantine.

Who can travel to Phuket from abroad?

  • Vaccinated foreign travelers from low and medium risk countries
  • Unvaccinated children under 12 years old
  • Unvaccinated children between 12 years old and 18 years old (Rapid Antigen Test on arrival is required)

***Unvaccinated adult travelers will be required to undergo mandatory quarantine at any ALQ Hotels in Phuket for 14 days

Phuket SandBox Requirements

  • Vaccine Certificate/proof of vaccination
  • ThailandPlus alert application on mobile phone
  • RT-PCR test before arrival and during your stay in Phuket
  • COVID-19 Insurance
  • Certificate of Entry (COE) issued by Thai Embassy/Consulate

***Full vaccination at least 14 days prior to your departure to Thailand and not more than 12 months.

But there are many different opinions on whether or not the Phuket Sandbox is a good idea or not. Some, who are worried about vaccinated travelers still being able to pass the COVID-19 virus onto others, say that the scheme endangers the local population. Some say that the scheme is just what’s needed to kickstart the tourism industry which has suffered greatly over the past year. What do you think?
